Why It Matters
China is treating AI relationships as a social policy issue.
These apps are moving into deeply personal territory: loneliness, dating, mental health, and emotional dependence. That is why Beijing is treating them like a social risk, not a novelty.
The birthrate angle matters. Beijing is worried about young people opting out of real relationships while the population keeps shrinking.
Users are grieving the shutdowns. For many people, these digital relationships felt emotionally real.
This is probably only the beginning. Governments are starting to ask where helpful companionship ends and unhealthy dependence begins.
NETFLIX USED GENAI IN ROUGHLY 300 TITLES

Netflix told investors that generative AI was used across roughly 300 titles in 2026.

MIRA MURATI’S STARTUP RELEASED INKLING
